Biomedical Technician
Summary:  Perform preventative maintenance and of medical equipment as directed by the Senior Biomedical Technician. Types of equipment on board are: Anesthetic systems, ventilators, CR X-ray, CT, Ultrasound imaging, OR and Ward equipment, YAG lasers and ophthalmic devices, autoclaves, oil-free compressors, dental suites and generators up to 35KVA. May be expected to live off ship in team house and spend approximately 2-3 days per week training local biomedical technicians in local hospitals and the remainder of the time assisting ship biomedical technicians.

What does Mercy Ships need in order to provide safe surgery?  Surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, tools, and... working machines. The Biomedical team is there to ensure all of our surgical and diagnostic equipment is working to a professional standard. This team also trains local biomedical technicians who can carry on the work in their own hospitals long after Mercy Ships leaves port.

The Biomedical Technician volunteer position, part of the Hospital, will be located on the Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ships. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is six months. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than twelve months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.

Qualifications Required:

  • Technical or academic training satisfactory for the position (Electronics, Clinical or Electronic Engineering)
  • 2 years' experience as a Biomedical Technician, preferably as Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician
  • Preference to have previous mission work in a related (biomedical) work environment, and being involved in local biomedical training program(s)
  • Commitments longer than 10 months require successful completed of OnBoarding program
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Fluent in English
  • When involved in local biomedical training program(s), French language proficiency desired
