Each ship houses hundreds of volunteers from 35 different nations. With so many nationalities onboard, our Purser team is on hand to take care of any and all travel and contact paperwork for our volunteers. The more organized and efficient our Purser team can be, the better focused our volunteers will be on bringing hope and healing to Africa. 

The Assistant Purser is responsible for preparing immigration documentation and maintaining crew records. This includes travel letters, port clearances, crew reporting, and visa/entry permits, and more.

The Assistant Purser volunteer position, part of the Purser/Reception Department, will be located on the Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ships. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is twelve months. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application 6 months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than 12 months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.


Qualifications Required:

  • Successful completion of Crowd Management in accordance with STCW A-V/2-1
  • Proficiency in computer business applications
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
