Anaesthetic Assistant
Summary:  Assists anaesthesia staff in providing anaesthetic care. Maintain inventory of anaesthetic related materials. Maintain anaesthetic equipment in conjunction with Biomedical Technician. Reorders anaesthetic supplies to keep the Operating Room sufficiently stocked.

Not expected to be available until September 2020. However, it is open for re-applications from those who have been offered dates for the Senegal Field Service as communicated by the Staffing team.  New applications for this position will be reviewed for our Talent Pool (waiting list).

Caring for our patients before, during, and after surgery is the main concern of our anaesthesia team. We aim to provide the best possible care to patients and this team is a key element to making sure surgeries are successful. 

The Anaesthetic Assistant volunteer position, part of the Hospital, will be located on the Africa Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is two weeks. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than twelve months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.

Qualifications Required:

  • Minimum two years experience as:
    • Certified Registered Nurse Anaesthetist, Nurse Anaesthetist
    • Registered Nurse with relevant Anaesthesia Assistant experience
    • Anaesthetic Technician
    • Registered Operating Department Practitioner or equivalent Anaesthetic Assistant qualification
  • Airway management (mask ventilation, intubation, LMA placement) and IV cannulation skills helpful, but not required
  • Knowledge of sterile technique
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent organizations skills
  • Fluent in English
