Anesthesia (& Intensive Care) Supervisor
Summary:  Responsible for the provision of a coordinated, high quality anesthetic, intensive care and acute pain service on a Mercy Ship and will undertake some clinical duties as well as managing the department. May be required to provide a teaching program and to supervise the clinical practice and training of local anesthesia providers in coordination with Medical Capacity Building.

Caring for our patients before, during, and after surgery is the main concern of our anesthesia team. We aim to provide the best possible care to patients and this team is a key element to making sure surgeries are successful. 

The Anesthesia (& Intensive Care) Supervisor volunteer position, part of the Hospital, will be located on the Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ships. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is two years. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than twelve months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.

Qualifications Required:

  • Successful completion of On Boarding Program 
  • FANZCA, FRCA or an equivalent anesthetic specialist medical qualification
  • Registration with a medical board as a specialist Anesthetist or Board Certified Anesthesiologist
  • At least four years experience as a Consultant Anesthetist, including at least two, but preferably three of the following specialist interests: difficult airway, pediatric anesthesia, intensive care, ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia
  • Essential experience and expertise in fiber-optic intubation, management of difficult airways and pediatric anesthesia 
  • Current experience in: spinal anesthesia and management of patients requiring intensive care
  • Fluent in English
  • French to International Standard B1 (or equivalent) preferred
  • International Driver's Permit required (purchase prior to travel if necessary)
