Admissions Nurse
Summary:  Oversee the admissions process for those patients requiring an inpatient stay, making sure records and testing are complete, alerting relevant staff to potential health issues, and orientating the patient and family member to the hospital. Function within the clinical standards set by Mercy Ships.

This role is only available for re-applications from those who have been offered dates for the Field Service as communicated by the Staffing team. 

Your role on the Admissions team is critical in the patient cycle. New patients, some who have never experienced a hospital before, will depend on you to get them through this new and frightening process. Your professional skills will serve you well, but it's your compassion for helping others that will make you successful in this role. 

The Admissions Nurse volunteer position, part of the Ward, will be located on the Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ships. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is eight weeks. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than twelve months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.

Qualifications Required:

  • Registered Nurse with active license in home country
  • Minimum two years' experience following licensure  
  • Current Basic Life Support certification is required; ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) are optional
  • Recent acute surgical/medical/Emergency Room/admissions unit experience of at least two years full-time or three years part-time in the past 5 years AND at the point of application can show working 30 hours or more per week in one of these clinical areas in the past 12 months 
  • Able to successfully perform an ECG
  • Phlebotomy experience required
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluent in English
