Summary:  Responsible to provide direct patient care including surgical selection, medical eye review, treatment of selected medical conditions, and post-operative care

The Mercy Ships' Ophthalmic team literally restores sight to the blind through the treatment and surgical removal of cataracts and other ocular maladies. 

The Clinical Ophthalmic Technician volunteer position, part of the Surgical team, will be located on the Africa Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is four weeks. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than ten months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.

This position requires living in a land-based team house with other crew members. 

Qualifications Required:

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician (COMT), Licensed Optometrist (non-therapeutic), Optician, Medical Opthalmologist, Therapeutic Optometrist, or Eye Nurse
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluent in English
