Summary:  Responsible for the clinical component of field projects, such as the Mercy Ships Safe Surgery course in sites remote from the ship, often throughout the host country.
Position, involves traveling throughout the host country by Mercy Ships vehicle (where possible), bus, taxi, and plane, and staying in local guesthouses. When not actively engaged in training (weekends and holidays), the position will be based in a hotel or onboard the ship, but time on ship is not guaranteed due to teh distances that may be required to travel. This position is part of a team consisting of one other Training Facilitator, the Medical Capacity Building Field Project Coordinator and where possible, two local doctors who are interested in Global Surgery, who act as translators as well as delivering the teaching themselves.

Our Medical Capacity Building team is what truly makes Mercy Ships a unique organization. While the ship focuses on serving patients in immediate need, our MCB Team works “off ship” to train, mentor, and equip local medical professionals to serve their communities long after we have departed. Because the goal has always been to work ourselves out of a job. 

The Medical Capacity Training Facilitator volunteer position, part of the Hospital, will be located on the Africa Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship. The preferred minimum commitment for this role is four weeks. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than ten months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program

Qualifications required:

  • Mercy Ships experience required 
  • Two years of surgical or anaesthesia experience preferred
  • Teaching / educator experience preferred
  • Experience in using the World Health Organization Safe Surgical Checklist or similar tool required 
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluent in English
  • International B1 Level (or equivalent) in French - Level B2 preferred
