Summary:  To provide a specialist rehabilitation service for post-operative plastic surgery patients (children & adults) following burns contracture release and correction of congenital deformities. To work closely with both the Plastic Surgeon and Plastics Dressings Nurse to optimize the patient’s outcome of surgery. This will involve pre-operative and post-operative assessment of patients, to include both objective and functional hand assessment, treatment planning and functional rehabilitation. The position will be based both on the ward and in an out-patient setting.

Surgery is just the beginning. The volunteers of the Rehab Team work with our post-surgery patients day in and out, helping them to fully regain the life they once had. This team takes our patients from recovering to recovered.  

The Hand Therapist volunteer position, part of the Rehab team, will be located on the Africa Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship. The preferred minimum commitment for this role is twelve weeks. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than ten months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program

Qualifications required:

  • Registered and Licensed Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist with a minimum of two years experience and at least one recent year with complex hand trauma and static splinting
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluent in English
