Summary:  - Oversee the maintenance and management of medical devices. Arrange for scheduled maintenance and calibration of equipment. Perform preventative maintenance and repair of medical equipment. Types of equipment on board are: Anesthetic systems, ventilators, CR X-ray, CT, Ultrasound imaging, OR and Ward equipment, YAG lasers and ophthalmic devices, autoclaves, oil-free compressors, dental suites and generators up to 35KVA.

- May be expected to live off ship in team house and spend approximately 2-3 days per week training local biomedical technicians in local hospitals and the remainder of the time assisting ship biomedical technicians.

What does Mercy Ships need in order to provide safe surgery?  Surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, tools, and... working machines. The Biomedical team is there to ensure all of our surgical and diagnostic equipment is working to a professional standard. This team also trains local biomedical technicians who can carry on the work in their own hospitals long after Mercy Ships leaves port.

The Biomedical Technician volunteer position, part of the Hospital, will be located on the Africa Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is six months. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than ten months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.

Qualifications Required:

  • Technical or academic training in electronics, biomedical, or clinical engineering
  • Two years experience as a Biomedical Technician, preferably as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician
  • Preference to have previous mission work in a related (biomedical) work environment, and being involved in local biomedical training programs
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluent in English
  • Proficiency in French preferred
