Grounds Assistant
Summary: Full Time
Assist in Landscaping and maintenance of International Support Center (ISC) grounds/property using hands, power tools or equipment.
Description:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Include But Not Limited To)
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls.
- Assist and work with the Agriculture Grounds and Land Manager to ensure plants, flower beds and all landscaping is maintained to a high standard. This includes:
- Spraying lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides, taking all safety precautions necessary when working with chemicals;
- Planting grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs; and
- Pruning and trim trees, shrubs and hedges.
- Operate, maintain, and do minor repair to power equipment such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, chain-saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning shears.
- Mow and edge lawns.
- Gather and remove litter. Rake and bag or burn leaves. Clean out drainage ditches and culverts.
- Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, and other grounds features.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Requirements)

- Knowledge of machines and tools used for landscaping/gardening, including basic knowledge of their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of plant care and landscaping activities.
- Exhibit wisdom and safe operating practices when using any equipment.
- Knowledge of the handling of hazardous chemicals to ensure compliance with local and state regulations related to their use for the protection of people and property.
- Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
- Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment. Ability to work in all weather extremes (heat, cold, rain).
- Must be able to lift, move and maneuver up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis, and up to 10 pounds on a frequent basis.

Education and Experience
The requirements listed below are representative of the education and / or experience required.
- One year job-related experience and experience with small equipment preferred.
- Experienced in plant care and landscaping activities.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Successful completion of Mercy Ships Entry Training will be required within the first year.
