Summary:  The Admissions Nurse oversees the admissions process for those patients requiring an inpatient stay, making sure records and testing are complete, alerting relevant staff to potential health issues, and orienting the patient and family member to the hospital. Functions within the clinical standards set by Mercy Ships.

Your role on the Admissions team is critical in the patient cycle. New patients, some who have never experienced a hospital before, will depend on you to get them through this new and frightening process. Your professional skills will serve you well, but it's your compassion for helping others that will make you successful in this role. 

The Admissions Nurse volunteer position, part of the Ward, will be located on the Africa Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship. The preferred minimum time commitment for this role is eight weeks. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date. Commitments longer than ten months require successful completion of Mercy Ships On Boarding Program.

Qualifications Required:

  • Current/active Registered Nurse license
  • Minimum two years experience following licensure  
  • Current and active CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) / BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • Current Acute Care Nursing experience
  • Able to successfully perform an ECG
  • Phlebotomy experience required
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluent in English
